Subject: [IML] QUEST: Finding, Creating, and/or Using Caustic Textures
How's it goin'?
After completing my B-1B cruise missile launch animation, I have decided
to tackle underwater scenes next. However, I am having a hard time
trying to find textures that could be used to simulate caustics. Can
this be simulated within Imagine, or do you have to use a map?

You can use the Imagine's Light textures for that.

Yes, there's a light-texture called Caustic, but I never got it to work
properly. Anyone?
I've used this method to simulate caustics:
Apply the Crumple and Transpar textures to a plane object that's positioned
between a Parallell Lightsource and the scene. The Bump color of the Crumple
texture can be set to gray for a less contrasting effect. The caustics can be
animated by moving the texture axis of the Crumple texture.

The caustics texture works but not like it should or did in the Dos
version. The caustic patterns produced in the Dos version had a
grainlike pattern and was more versatile. If you wan't to make the
Windows version work you have to use a setting of 0-.1 and no higher
otherwise it won't work.

The caustic lighting texture is tricky. It took me a lot of tests before I
found a setting that worked right. I kept the Caustic.iob and start with it
instead of the default settings when I need this light effect. Once you got
it set, it works very well. It breaks up the light and can simulate cloud
shadows. leaf shadows or water refraction lighting. It's particularly usefull
in scanline rendering since it gives the impression of off screen objects
casting shadows into your scene.

Steve Spikings did a couple of Caustic textures for the Amiga a while ago.
They definitely do work and do a good job of 'underwater ' type texturing
(amongst other things). Not useful if you don't have an Amiga
but perhaps he would be willing to share his secrets with an IFW texture
creator.
They are available on Aminet in gfx/3d. - algtxt.lha and algtxt2.lha
algtxt2.lha has a second version of the Caustics texture which allows
you to specify that only the top faces of an object get the texture. Perfect
for the 'submarine gliding along underwater' anim.
I don't have a URL but I do have an email address, S.J.Spikings@Sheffield.ac.uk
